Gulf Construction Online published a nice article about Port-A-Cool. You can read the full article at their portal.
EVAPORATIVE cooling systems from Port-A-Cool are gaining popularity
and are now finding increasing application in areas that were considered
cost prohibitive to keep cool with traditional air-conditioners,
according to the US-based firm which will showcase its diverse portfolio
of products at The Big 5.
The company says its evaporative coolers are extremely economical,
operating for less than $1 a day, allowing their use in
applications where users would otherwise not be able to afford the
installation, maintenance, and operational costs of traditional
air-conditioners.
Thanks to the efficiency and economy they afford, these cooling units
are now being using in a diverse range of applications, according to
Ben Wulf, vice-president of marketing, Port-A-Cool. “Traditionally, the
majority of our products have been focused on commercial environments,
where you have a lot of heat being generated or for worker safety and
comfort, such as construction and industrial sites. However, we continue
to find new applications on a daily basis, ranging from agricultural
plots and the cooling of equestrian facilities to camel farms.
“In this region, worker safety continues to be a growing concern, and
we are continuing to look for and explore new applications all the
time.”
Wulf says the biggest value that Port-A-Cool brings is its
versatility and the number of applications in which the product can be
used. “Additionally, with energy costs continuing to rise, our units are
extremely energy efficient, operating on only water and standard
electricity, making them a much more affordable option compared to
traditional alternatives,” he says.
So what’s special about Port-A-Cool’s evaporative cooling solution?
Wulf says his company has a variety of units in its product portfolio to
meet a number of applications.
We also distinguish ourselves in the market as we produce our own
cooling media, allowing us to tightly control the various components and
inputs required for producing our units. One other element of
distinction is we are the only portable evaporative cooling unit being
distributed in the GCC that is made in the US,” he adds.
While the evaporative cooling concept remains the same, Port-A-Cool
has continuously improved the technology of the products allowing them
to be more efficient and to be used in a wider range of applications.
“In addition, our technology has always been ‘green’, in the sense
that our units run on tap water and, therefore, are free of harsh
chemicals and refrigerants. The energy savings are also significant and
the units use very little electricity,” Wulf says.
Port-A-Cool uses 100 per cent virgin kraft paper, containing a higher
resin content that helps to provide effective and efficient cooling,
with increased durability, strength and longevity of the pads. Its Kuul
Pads last for three to four years with minimal maintenance required, and
essentially allows one to work in humid environments such as the Gulf.
Wulf says the popularity of its evaporative coolers is rising. “The
response has been very strong so far. We have been in the Gulf for a
little over seven years and we continue to experience growing demand as
we further establish our presence.
“We expect the demand to continue to expand as we continue to educate
both consumers and the commercial markets on the value and benefits of
our products,” he remarks.
In addition, Port-A-Cool allows the use of the outdoor space
especially during the summer. “Our products are great for outdoor dining
areas, patios, chalets and Ramadan tents,” he says. “Our units are
currently being used in the Burj Khalifa, Cafe Blanc and The Orchestra
restaurant and Cafe both at Dubai Mall, Al Manzil Hotel, and Sheraton
Jumeirah (all in the UAE) as well as in private residences across the
region. They are also great for outdoor festivals, hospitality events,
and concerts where you need to keep the temperature down while
accommodating large crowds.”
In addition, Port-A-Cool also has products in some of the restaurants
and dining areas at the Burj Khalifa to keep visitors cool during the
summer months.
In terms of iconic projects, the company has worked on many. “The one
that stands out in my mind is the Hamad International Airport in Qatar,
which used over 300 Port-A-Cool units during its construction phase to
keep the workers cool, safe and comfortable during extreme temperatures.
Similarly, our products were used during the construction of Muscat
International Airport. Some of our prominent clients in the UAE include
Abu Dhabi Steel Company, Emirates Steel, Bridgestone Middle East,
Schlumberger, Weatherford Middle East and many more,” says Wulf.
